How do I calculate how much beading I need?

To calculate how much stop or staff bead you need:

  1. Measure the perimeter of the window frame - i.e. frame height x 2 and frame width x 2.
  2. Add the frame width and height measurements together then add at least 100mm on to each measurement to allow for a mitre cut.

To calculate how much parting bead you need:

  1. Measure vertically from the window sill to the head of the frame.
  2. Multiply by two (as you will need this on both sides of the window).
Can I seal the meeting rail?

Yes, you can achieve this by installing the pile and brush carrier, which needs to be routed into the meeting rail on the bottom sash. Meeting rail Pile and Brush Carrier products are sold in 1 metre lengths, which is usually ample size for most windows.

Can I seal the gap at the top of the top sash?

Yes, there are two ways you can do this. We would recommend using the pile and brush carrier (also used for the meeting rail), which would need to be routed into the top of the top sash. Alternatively, you can use a piece of Ecobead parting bead at the top of the top sash.

If you’re not sure which option will be best for your windows, just give us a call and we’ll be happy to advise.

Do I need to bother draught proofing the parting bead as well as the stop bead?

Yes, definitely! Many people do not bother to do this, and frankly, the job is not worth doing if you do not do it properly. The parting bead is the trim of timber that vertically separates both sashes. It is important that the sash window is entirely sealed - even a small gap can cause a massive reduction in performance, let alone 3mm along the whole length of the box itself.

Will I be able to see Ecobead on the window once it has been installed?

Ecobead sash window draught proofing system cannot be seen when the window is closed, and when the window is open you’ll only see neatly installed draught seals protruding from the sash. The beauty of Ecobead is that once installed it is an integral part of the window, rather than stick-on adhesive solutions that are visible and can look unsightly.

Is Ecobead right for me?

If you have double hung sash windows that are rattling, letting in draughts, smoke and/or noise then yes, Ecobead is right for you. In fact you’ll be amazed at the difference it will make.

When should I not use Ecobead?

If your sash windows have fallen into a particularly bad state of disrepair, for example, rotting timber, broken cords, slamming shut etc we would highly recommend that you fix these issues first before installing Ecobead.

Can I use Ecobead on doors?

No, Ecobead is unfortunately not designed for doors.

Can I use Ecobead on casement windows?

No, unfortunately Ecobead is designed for double hung sash windows only.

Why does Ecobead have brush seal rather than foam seal?

In our experience foam perishes far more quickly than brush pile. If foam is damp and then compressed it is far slower to spring back. It has far more memory than pile. It is not so forgiving on old windows with varying gap widths. Brush pile fits uneven gaps far more effectively.

Will Ecobead need to be painted?

The timber elements of Ecobead products are undercoated with 3-in-1 Dulux white paint. They will need to ‘finished’ once installed and painted to match the colour of your windows. To achieve an optimal finish, nail holes will need to be filled and sanded, and top coat paint added. Timber is a natural product and while we try to achieve excellence in the quality of the timber, it is inevitable that some imperfections may exist naturally in the grain. Some light sanding / filling may be required. Please be very careful not to get paint on the brush seal, which will have a negative impact on its performance.
